My little girl who is now 21 months old has just been diagnosed with measles. Although she appears to be over the worst of if I am a little concerned about secondary infections. Can anyone give me any advice? She is still breastfed so it's getting lots of goodness there and she is on a mutlivitamin and mineral suppliment. Thanks

Hi Jo, sorry to hear about your little one, and glad she appears to be over the worst.  I have a wonderful book called "Immunity Foods for Healthy Kids" by Lucy Burney...and she has an interesting section on measles.  It's too long to quote it all, but these are a few sections from it...you probably already know most of this, but hope something is helpful...

* Measles depletes the stores of Vitamin A in your child's body.  Vitamin A is a fat-soluble viatmin that is stored in the liver.  Deficiency symptoms include poor night vision and inflammation of the eyes, frequent colds and infections, mouth ulcers, dry skin, diarrhoea and dandruff.

* Vitamin A is found in animal and plant based foods.  The animal form, retinal,  is found in abundance in dairy products, eggs, oily fish and liver.  However, none of these foods are ideal for a sick child.

*The best way to boost your child's intake of Vitamin A is to offer her foods and drinks that are rich in the plant baased form of Vitamin A, beta-carotene.  Beta-carotene is found in brightly coloured fruits and veg, such as apricot, carrot, squash, pumpkin, cantaloupe melon, watermelon, sweet potato, mango, broccoli, cabbage, kale and other green leafy veg.

*Beta-carotene is also an antioxidant which means that it boosts the immune system by fighting the harmful free radicals that cause disease. (especially important when body is under attack from a strong viral infection such as measles).

*Food rich in beta-carotene are often also rich in Vitamin C..also important anti-oxidant.  Other good sourced of vit C are citrus fruit, peppers, berries, blackcurrants, parsley, broccoli, papaya, mango and apple.

* Zinc is another important nutrient with a role to play in both the prevention and treatment of this disease.  It helps to mobilize stores of Vit A from the liver as well as supporting the growth and development of white bood cells, the immune-army stalwarts that help protect your child from infection.  You can get suckable zinc lozenges for children from health food shops.  Foods rich in zinc are shellfish, poultry, game, lean red meat, pulses, seeds, nuts and wholegrains.

recipes to come...

Taken from "Immunity foods for Healthy Kids" by Lucy Burney

Apple & Carrot tonic (makes one glass)

Packed with beta-carotene and vitamin C, this is a good tonic for children with measles.

2 eating apples, peeled and cored
1 carrot peeled
filtered water

Chop the applies and carrot into four.  Feed through and juicer and dilute 50:50 with water

immunity soup

This veg soup is full of immune-boosting vitamins and herbs.  It is light and easy to digest.  As your child gets better you can add some cooked chicken or chickpeas for a more filling meal.

1 medium onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
1tbsp olive oil
1/2 butternut squash, peeled and cubed
1 carrot, peeled and cubed
1 slice ginger
a handful of pot barley
1 sweet potato, cubed
1 sprig of thyme
850ml veg. stock
1 head of broccoli
A handful of fresh parsley

Cook the onion and the garlic in the olive oil until transparent.  Add all of the other ingredients, except the broccoli and parsley and stir well.  Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.  Add the broccoli and simmer for a further 5 minutes.  Sprinkle the parsley over the soup before serving.  If your child does not like lumpy soup you can liquidize it for a smooth texture.

Let us know how she's doing!! xxx

thanks for that. The funny thing is that one of the few things Isabel will actually eat is dairy. She is only really eating porridge made with milk, cheese by the handful and yoghurt. Along with a few bits of fruit and shell fish. They are really clever little things aren't they, she often eats what she needs for a particular phase. There was me thinking she was just being  Laughing fussy

Hiya!  I would strongly recommend emailing Joanna from the Vaccine Awareness Network - she REALLY knows her stuff about childhood diseases and how to sort them out.

thanks for all your help. Isabel now appears to be very healthy, fingers crossed no secondary infections so far. We used some homeopathy and some honey to treat the nasty cough she was left with and tried to introduce as many vitamins into her diet as possible. Also introduced a multivitamin.

Fingers crossed we will stay well  Smile
