How long?

Hello Adeline,

I am 39 weeks+3 pregnant and think I may have had a 'show' in the last 24 hours.  I'm wondering how long it might be now before I experience any other labour signs.  I have a generalised back ache, tummy cramps and heavy feeling in my legs.  Does this mean that labour is imminent, or could I go on waiting for ages? I've also had a bit of nausea and loose bowel movement, but nothing that I would actually describe as a 'contraction'! Is there anything you would recommend I do to get the labour going?  I have tried walking around, a bumpy car ride, raspberry leaf tea etc., but nothing seems to be making it progress.  I would be grateful of any advice you can offer.  Thanks, Alex  Confused

How exciting, it sounds as if your labour is imminent! Some women experience a show as long as two weeks before labour really starts, and some women have a false start where labour appears to begin and then eases off again, but you are close to your expected date, so labour may well start within a few hours. All the symptoms you describe indicate that your body is getting ready.
Be prepared! Keep a phone close by and let anyone you want with you for the birth know you are getting ready, incase they have far to come. Other than that, just go about your life as usual and try to focus on other things if you can, to take the waiting off your mind.
I wouldnt worry about trying to get things going. You will read lots of tips in pregnancy books, but the best thing for a smooth birth is to let your body pace it's self. Patience is the first lesson in parenting!
Best wishes, have a lovely birth and enjoy your baby.
Let me know how things progress.

Ooh, that is very exciting! Have a wonderful birth and we'd love to hear your birth story when things have settled down and you're ready to share it! xxx
