Hi there

I'm a student midwife in my final year of study, I am currently writing my dissertation (a literature review) and am on the hunt for primary research about aromatherapy during labour.  I have 2 by Ethel Burns (of course) and a couple of others.  If anyone could point me in the direction of any more I would be extremely grateful.  I am happy for anything from pain relief, relaxation, acceleration etc etc , or any articles from safety of oils to setting up a service of aromatherapy for use during labour.

Or any hints tips or offers to come and have a look in practice..(I have 3 weeks elective placement to fill in February)
 Very Happy

Hello Grainne

Sharon is on holiday at the moment but hopefully someone with aromatherapy experience will get in touch with you.  I think it's great that midwives are so interested in the 'natural' approach - there's a whole book written for midwives on reflexology for example.

I am sure several on this site would love to read (and learn from) your final work.  Good luck with it and the placement.  Where are you located so people know where you are if they can help you out here.

Warmest wishes
Anne

I am currently living and in placement in Milton Keynes, and studying at Northampton University.  I am originally from Teddington, so am familiar with  Middlesex, Surrey and London.

This website originates in Cornwall and as yet has quite a small membership - but it is expanding - so hopefully someone will pick it up.  I assume you have checked with any of the aromatherapy associations to see if they can help.

Another thought Gwainne - have you come across Dr Gowri Motha.  She's an obstretician who I think now runs a private clinic based on natural birth using reflexology and hypnosis.  But she is London based - I believe - and may have some contacts.  You might want to check out her website: www.gentlebirthmethod.com

Hi Grainne & welcome! It's lovely to have you on board.

What a wonderful topic for a dissertation.  I'd be interested to hear how it unfolds.  I am not an aromatherapist, but perhaps you could pose your question to our resident aromatherapist here http://naturesmother.myfreeforum.org/forum22.php  I'm sure she has a lot of knowledge she can share with you as she's been doing aromatherapy for many years!

Have you explored other natural remedies for pregnancy, such as raspberry leaf tea? Would you recommend it to the mums you look after someday?

There is also the Active Birth Centre in London, run by Janet Balaskas who's books I'm sure you've stumbled upon http://www.activebirthcentre.com/  It would be great to hear your views/experiences on alternative therapies & remedies for pregnancy, birth & beyond.

warmest wishes & best of luck with your dissertation
sharon x
